Ambassador Bankole Adeoye Re-elected as AU Commissioner for Political Affairs,
Peace, and Security
Addis Ababa, February 12, 2025 – In a significant development for the African Union (AU), Ambassador Bankole Adeoye has been re-elected as the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security. The election took place during the 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council in Addis Ababa, where Adeoye secured another four-year term by defeating Jean Jacques Demafouth of the Central African Republic.
Ambassador Adeoye, a seasoned diplomat from Nigeria, has held the position since March 2021, following his initial election at the 34th AU Summit in February 2021. His tenure has been marked by significant strides in conflict resolution, the promotion of good governance, and the strengthening of Africa's security architecture
Under his leadership, the AU's Department of Political Affairs, Peace, and Security has advanced a transformative agenda, emphasizing inclusive partnerships for human security, effective conflict management, and the promotion of democracy and good governance. Notably, Ambassador Adeoye played a pivotal role in facilitating the Ethiopia-Tigray peace process, which led to the landmark Cessation of Hostilities Agreement in 2022.
The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, commended Adeoye's re-election, describing it as a testament to his outstanding leadership, diplomatic expertise, and unwavering commitment to peace. Tuggar emphasized that Adeoye's tenure has been marked by significant progress in conflict resolution and the strengthening of Africa's security framework.
As he embarks on his second term, Ambassador Adeoye is expected to continue championing the nexus between peace, security, and development, with a focus on innovative partnerships and the effective implementation of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) and the African Governance Architecture (AGA).
His re-election is seen as a reaffirmation of the AU's commitment to fostering a more secure and stable Africa, driven by effective governance and sustainable development.
